History: Saw Palmetto is a small palm tree native to the southeastern United States, whose fruit was used as a dietary staple for Native Americans for thousands of years. In general, palm trees contain powerfully strengthening compounds, making it ideal for its use as a medical herb. Native American Indians used Saw Palmetto to increase manliness and to boost the health of those who were ill. The Seminole Indians used Saw palmetto to aid in relieving urinary, digestive,and dysentery issues.
Modern Uses:The Commission E approved the internal use of saw palmetto berry for urination problems in benign prostatic hyperplasia stages I and II. Traditional uses include chronic or subacute cystitis, catarrh of the genito-urinary tract, testicular atrophy, sex hormone disorders, and, specifically, prostatic enlargement in modern phytotherapy.
