Cedarwood is a pyramid-shaped majestic evergreen tree, which grows up to 131 ft. high. The wood itself is hard and strongly aromatic because of the essential oil it contains, which is obtained by steam distillation. Originating in the Atlas Mountains in North Africa, linen chests were frequently crafted from Cedar. The ancient Egyptians prized the oil, mostly for embalming purposes, but also for cosmetics and perfumery, and Solomon's Temple was built with Cedar Wood. Today, closet liners and accessories are frequently crafted from Cedar, and the oil is currently used in commercial soaps, cosmetics and perfumes, especially men's colognes.


The components found in cedarwood oil include cedrine, cedrol, and thujopsene. These may have the following properties:antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, diuretic, insecticidal

and antifungal. Cedarwood Essential oil is excellent for the anxiety issues, the skin, and insomnia.

Vetiver Essential Oil is distilled from the roots of a grass used in India and Sri Lanka for the creation of woven matting. A juniper berry is the female seed cone produced by the various species of junipers. It is not a true berry but a cone with unusually fleshy and merged scales, which give it a berry-like appearance. The berries are green when young, and mature to a purple-black color over about 18 months. The berries are plucked from the branches of the plant once a year, and dried and ground before distillation. They have traditionally been used as an aromatic aid to meditation, and had remedial applications. It has antiseptic, antifungal, detoxifying, and astringent properties, and is commonly used for skin complaints. In aromatherapy, it has a calming effect. Great for use in a diffuser, room spray, bath, massage blend, cream, and a compress.

History:Wild Roses were used widely by Native Americans who would use the roots stems, flowers, leaves, and fruit of the flower for both medicinal purposes and food. To Native Americans in many western tribes, such as the Paiute, Nez Perce, and Interior Salish, Wild Roses were a symbol of life. Many Native Americans tribes believed that Wild Roses kept ghosts from causing harm to the living, so they were often placed in the homes or clothing of people who were in mourning or felt haunted. Wild Roses were also sometimes attached to cradleboards to bring vitality to infants. In some tribes, Rose motifs were used in quillwork, beadwork, or other Native arts to represent survival and vitality as well.

The leaves and the fruit are mildly astringent, diuretic, laxative and tonic. The leaves are mainly used, though the fruits are an excellent food to take when feverish and are also effective in treating rheumatic gout. A tea made from the leaves is a blood tonic and has been used as a treatment for diarrhoea in adults and children. It is used in the treatment of chilblains and also as an external wash on sunburn. A poultice can be made from the powdered leaves mixed in oil, it is used to treat open sores. The leaves are harvested in the summer and dried for later use. A decoction is used internally in the treatment of diarrhoea and chronic dysentery. Externally it is used to treat chilblains and as a throat gargle.

History: Figwort is closely related to Mullein and Rhemania, and like its relations, has been used throughout history to stimulate the body to heal itself. It was first used by the Native Americans and then later by the Eclectic physicians. Native American healers used it as a heal all for problems with the skin.


ModernUses: Specific for skin conditions like eczema and/or psoriasis, but can be used both internally and topically for any chronic skin condition (especially those accompanied by eruptions, itchiness and irritation). History: Today Witch Hazel is found all over the world and is a very common home remedy; however, the plant is native to North America. Natives commonly used Witch Hazel for medicinal purposes. In fact, Native Americans taught early English settlers how to use Witch Hazel as a common remedy, who in turn took the plant back to Europe. Witch Hazel was introduced into English gardens by Peter Collinson, who maintained correspondence with plant hunters in the American colonies. Nowadays, it is rarely seen in the nursery trade except for woodland and wildlife restoration projects and native plant enthusiasts.


Modern Uses: The Commission E approved the use of witch hazel preparations for minor skin injuries, local inflammation of skin and mucous membranes, hemorrhoids, and for varicose veins.


Witch hazel is used as an active compound in topical ointments and suppositories for the treatment of hemorrhoids (Anon., 1991; Reynolds, 1989). The German Standard License for witch hazel leaf and/or bark tea infusion, for oral ingestion or as a mouthwash, approves its use as supportive therapy for acute, non-specific diarrhea, and also to treat inflammation of the gums and mucous membranes of the mouth (Braun et al., 1997). ESCOP indicates the internal use of witch hazel leaf infusion and/or fluidextract for symptomatic treatment of conditions related to varicose veins (painful and heavy legs, and for hemorrhoids) and the external use of the decoction and/or semisolid extract for bruises, sprains, and minor injuries of the skin, local inflammations of the skin, and mucosa, hemorrhoids, and relief of neurodermatitis atopic symptoms (ESCOP, 1997). In France, witch hazel extracts and tinctures are approved for oral and topical application to treat subjective symptoms of venous insufficiency and hemorrhoids. Local application is also allowed for relief of eye irritation and for oral hygiene

Black Walnut Leaf

History: Native American Indians enjoyed the pleasures and health benefits of the Black Walnut well before European explorers arrived. The upper Great Lakes region provides archeological evidence of walnut consumption dating back to 2000 BC. Black Walnut was used by several Native Americans, including the Cherokee, Delaware, Iroquois, and Meskwaki, in teas as a cathartic, emetic, or disease remedy agent. It was also chewed or applied for toothaches, snake bites, and headaches. The Comanche pulverized the leaves of black walnut for treatment of ringworm.


Uses: worms, burns, skin conditions


The Commission E approved the use of walnut leaf for mild, superficial inflammations of the skin and excessive perspiration of the hands and feet.


The German Standard License indicates walnut leaf aqueous decoction to be used topically as a cataplasm or partial bath for the same conditions as approved in the Commission E (Braun et al., 1997). An infusion of equal parts walnut leaf and wild pansy herb (Viola tricolor), for external use, is particularly useful for skin complaints in children (Weiss, 1988). In France, walnut leaf is used topically to treat scalp itching, peeling, and dandruff, sunburn and superficial burns, and as an adjunctive emollient and itch-relieving treatment in skin disorders (Bruneton, 1995). In India, walnut leaf decoction is used externally as a wash for malignant sores and pustules 


Active Ingredients: Tannins, Juglone, vitamin C, zinc


Actions: Antifungal, antiparasitic


Warning: Prolonged use is not advised due to the presence of significant quantities of juglone, a known mutagen in animals.

Marshmallow Root

Althaea officinalis

Also known as Althea, Sweetweed, and Mortification Root

History: The Marshmallow plant has been used for centuries in Europe as both a medicinal herb and a food. In the Middle Ages, Marshmallow was used to make a dessert called pate de guimauve, which is similar to today’s marshmallows. Although, today’s marshmallows have no resemblance to its ancestor. Medicinally, the Marshmallow plant was used as a soothing remedy for irritated tissues and coughing. The puritans brought Marshmallow to American and taught the local Indians of its medicinal value.


Modern Uses: pain, inflammation of the mucous membranes, dry cough, inflammation of the lining of the stomach, diarrhea, stomach ulcers, constipation, urinary tract inflammation, and stones in the urinary tract, abscesses, skin ulcers, burns, insect bites.


Marshmallow root is applied to the skin as an ingredient in ointments for chapped skin as well as for pain and swelling of the feet and hands due to exposure to the cold


The Commission E approved the internal use of marshmallow root for irritation of the oral and pharyngeal mucosa and associated dry cough, and for mild inflammation of the gastric mucosa.


The British Herbal Compendium indicates its use internally for gastroenteritis, peptic and duodenal ulceration, common and ulcerative colitis, and enteritis. Topically: as a mouthwash or gargle for inflammation of the mouth and pharynx; as a poultice or ointment/cream in furunculosis, eczema and dermatitis. ESCOP lists its use for dry cough and irritations of the oral, pharyngeal, or gastric mucosa. The German Standard License for marshmallow root tea approves its use for soothing of irritation from mucosal inflammations in the mouth and pharynx, upper respiratory tract, and gastrointestinal tract.
