A juniper berry is the female seed cone produced by the various species of junipers. It is not a true berry but a cone with unusually fleshy and merged scales, which give it a berry-like appearance. The berries are green when young, and mature to a purple-black color over about 18 months. The berries are plucked from the branches of the plant once a year, and dried and ground before distillation. They have traditionally been used as an aromatic aid to meditation, and had remedial applications. It has antiseptic, antifungal, detoxifying, and astringent properties, and is commonly used for skin complaints. In aromatherapy, it has a calming effect. Great for use in a diffuser, room spray, bath, massage blend, cream, and a compress.

The Milk Thistle plant received its name from the milky white hue of some its pink flower veins. According to a medieval legend, the Virgin Mary spilled milk on the plant while nursing her child. Due to this story, many people were wrongly led to believe that eating the plant led to increased lactation. However, Milk thistle was also used as a treatment for liver dysfunction, serpent bites and as an antidote for liver toxins. Nicholas Culpeper, a well known British herbalist from the mid 1600, reported that Milk Thistle was effective for relieving obstructions of the liver. In 1898, eclectic physicians Harvey Felter and John Lloyd stated that the herb was good for congestion of the liver, spleen, and kidney. Native Americans also used Milk Thistle, but as a remedy to treat boils and other skin diseases.

History: The name of Erythraea is derived from the Greek word erythros which means red and refers to the color of the herbs flower. The genus was formerly called Chironia, from the Centaur Chiron, who was famous in Greek mythology for his skill in medicinal herbs and is supposed to have cured himself with it from a wound he had accidentally received from an arrow poisoned with the blood of the hydra. The English name Centaury has the same origin. The ancients named the plant Fel Terrae, or Gall of the Earth from its extreme bitterness.
Centaury is Aromatic bitter, stomachic and tonic. It acts on the liver and kidneys, purifies the blood, and is an excellent tonic.

History: Juniper is a very versatile tree that is native the Northern Hemisphere. The tree has been associated with many mythical and magical abilities throughout history. In the Middle Ages, people would burn the tree or hold juniper berries in their mouth to prevent contagious disease like the Bubonic Plague or leprosy. Juniper trees were also believed to ward off evil spirits. The herbal uses of the Juniper Berry date back to ancient times as well. Both Greek and Arabian physicians used Juniper Berry Powder to treat ailments, especially stomach issues. The American Indians of the Great Plains used the berries as a food and as a medicinal herb and was used to treat kidney, urinary, and respiratory infections. Due to its antiseptic properties, Juniper Berries are still used today in many of the same ways it was used anciently.
