However, Calendula was best known for its medicinal use as a remedy for skin conditions. Dioscorides, an ancient Greek healer, called Calendula an excellent skin healer. During the Dark Ages, Calendula was believed to have magical powers by Medieval healers due to its healing abilities and was a primary ingredient in ointments, balms, salves, and creams. In North America, Cherokee Medicine men used Calendula for a wide range of skin conditions and external wounds. Calendula continues to be used to treat skin conditions today.
